LAST GENOCIDE MEMORIAL
This project designed for an architectural competition was inspired by the Auschwitz
crematorium chimneys. Through two different chambers, the design introduces the
visitor to a whole spatial and emotional experience.
Firstly, the guest is introduced to a very tight, tall, and gloomy room, which creates a
feeling of constriction. From there, the pedestrian passes to the main room loaded with
light, views from the sky and water meaning cleaness, freedom and hope at the end of
the journey.
This proposal explores the expressiveness of raw materials like concrete and brick. The
light gives presence to the materials and the materials denote the different aspects of
the light during day and night. The curved walls add sensuality and mystery to the path.
The whole intention of the project is to transmit meaning to the passenger.
The external areas were treated as a simple volume that reminds the shape of a big
chimney. Symbol of the torture and murders that were committed there. A small,
paved area allows people to gather at the exterior for education purposes.
Material: Reinforced concrete and brick. Area: 25 m²
