BUILT ON A NARROW PLOT
This house located in the heart of the Brighton residential area, presents a very singular
challenge. The plot is just 10 metres wide by 40 metres long.
To take advantage of the whole width of the terrain it was proposed to build a
transparent structure on the ground floor level. In that way, the inhabitant experiences
the whole width of the plot of land, from the boundary wall to the external fence.
An elegant raw concrete wall of two metres in height defines the whole perimeter of the
property and can contain the interiority of the residence. All the visual extension finds
its limits in this opaque barrier that separates the private from the public spaces.
On the contrary, the front of the property is open to the corner, giving enough space to
the façade to expose itself to the pedestrian. This also articulates the access of the
cars to the garage and creates a clear node in that specific intersection.
The first level is a very simple volume that floats over the transparent structure below.
The appropriate proportions, material plus a long window in the centre give lightness to
the box creating a levitation effect.
On the ground floor, the brief contemplates a double garage, a formal lounge and a
separate open living area with a kitchen, dining and living room. The space is well-lit
and is connected with the exterior areas of the garden and swimming pool.
On top, there are three bedrooms, a study, two balconies and a void over the formal
lounge that receives the stairs. The garage plus the concrete fence articulates the
access of the residence.
