SKI CABIN IN THE MOUNTAINS
The sphere is the most effective volume shape in terms of energy efficiency. It
provides maximum internal space with less surface area, which means a decrease in
energy loss.
Based on a simple brief, this shelter for a group of skiers offers an open living area,
three bedrooms and services. The lodge was designed taking into account basic
principles of physics to provide the most comfortable space in an area of extreme
weather conditions.
Another important consideration was the fact that, with this project, we wanted to
show the potential of using new construction materials in innovative ways to produce
better and more sustainable buildings.
The vault is built in aerated cement blocks arranged following the curves of the
timber formwork. The fact that there is air within the pores, gives this material
excellent thermic insulation capacity and waterproof resistance. Also, because it
has a cementitious base, it provides fire protection.
These blocks are easy to cut and carve, this property was key to the design. Every
small part of the vault must adapt to different angles. After being settled over the
formwork, many narrow trenches need to be open on the surface of the chamber to
receive slim steel bars, around 5 millimetres. That forms an internal grid that
provides structural resistance to the solution.
The concavity of the cover and the well-positioned windows allow views and avoid
the effect of strong winds. External timber structures complement the design providing
an extra layer of protection and storage for ski equipment.
Materials: Aerated concrete, steel and wood. Area: 120 m²
